Each material and process has its own distinct advantages. Aluminium excels in being lightweight yet robust, while casting offers stability and the ability to replicate pieces in large quantities. When heated, aluminium becomes molten and is poured into moulds to take shape. A flared 'casting sprue' facilitates the flow of molten metal into the mould; once the casting is complete, the sprue is either broken or sawn off. Inspired by this juncture, we considered the possibility of retaining the sprue and transforming it into an appealing feature. By integrating it with the dovetail joint—a common woodworking technique—a dovetail slot is carved into a wooden board, allowing the 'flared sprue' of the casting to be inserted. This results in a bold hybridisation of craftsmanship, uniting the distinctive characteristics of different materials.
